Bleak and descriptive, this is a story for when you need a sad book. I appreciated learning about the conditions of farmers during the Dust Bowl and severe drought during the Great Depression. This felt so current, with so many natural disasters, unemployment, and immigration debates going on at the moment. The real story here is a mother/daughter story, fraught with it's own complications, and the will to survive. This was not an easy listen, I felt sad, outraged, and heartbroken; but it also seemed like I was reading a piece of history that I didn't know anything about, and that made it worth it.
