PERFECT. Sally Hawkins is perfect as Maude Lewis and inhabits the character as wholly as I have ever seen any actress ever do, even among the greats. Ethan Hawke is also perfect as Everett Lewis - they both brought me to tears often. We laughed with them and we cried with them and he made me hate him more than once - a couple of times I could have killed him! My response to this movie was visceral and I was so moved by their portrayals of the central characters that it kept me awake. Supporting characters were good as well and it was nice to see Zachary Bennett, an old friend from Road to Avonlea, again. Run, do not walk, to see this thoughtful, sensitive, Canadian film. No CGI, no explosions or car chases though: just dirt poor, simple, everyday people living their lives during a very hard time in history. Maybe the best Canadian film I have ever seen.
