A well-crafted thriller with Le Carré's trademark emphasis on betrayal, honour and 'doing the right thing' in a world that has lost its moral compass. Two fine actors are the sheet anchors. Stellan Skarsgard steals the show as a larger-than-life Russian criminal of the 'honourable' school, and Damian Lewis is the MI6 man who bears a passing resemblance to George Smiley and who has a score to settle with a cabinet minister on the take. Ewan McGregor nicely underplays the British academic caught up in the drama - though his love interest (Naomi Harris) could have (and maybe should have) been written out of the screenplay without damaging the plot. Add the outstanding location scouting, imaginative direction and arresting photography and you have a nice evening's entertainment.
