“Siege and Storm” is the thrilling sequel to “Shadow and Bone”. Alina Starkov is back as she tries to defeat the Darkling, but the power struggle isn’t over yet. I loved the growth of all the characters, especially Alina’s. We can truly see the struggle she feels with her power. I also loved how well the author portrayed that wall between Alina and Mal as she becomes more powerful. All the emotions that these characters felt all made sense, and it was portrayed beautifully. There is more world-building, and we get to know more of the power dynamics of this incredible world that Leigh Bardugo has created. This book is definitely more complicated and has more layers to unravel than Shadow and Bone. There isn’t a clear, distinguishable line between good and evil anymore, and as the story progresses it gets more blurred. The new characters added were just a thrill to read about, especially Sturmhond with his overconfidence and quick wit. We get to see more of Alina’s dark side, which makes sense as she dives deeper into her power. I liked that there was more tension and buildup in this story. Overall it was a highly entertaining book that kept me hooked throughout! 4.5/5 -@India_ink of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board The book was so slow, and nothing seemed to happen for most of it. While this was an informative middle chapter to the trilogy, I can't help but be slightly disappointed that there just wasn't more. I found myself really excited in the final chapters with the sudden blaze of action but couldn't help feeling like Bardugo saved all the fun stuff for the end to make sure no one gave up on the series mid way. I needed more Darkling, I needed more Nikolai, I needed more action, but the only thing I got more of was Mal and Alina being awkward. There were some nice little twists that kept me from putting this down, and the ending was fantastic, so I'm still excited to keep moving on. Rating – 3/5. @Average_Bookworm of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
