Another funny, adventuresome book by Mr. Healy! As a sequel, this book packs a heavy-sized punch as the familiar, lovable characters go on another adventure to save their world from villainous disaster. Er, try to anyway. The characters get more development in this book, and the stakes were definitely heightened as key figures were put in more life-threatening situations and showed more of their true feelings. Briar was a key role-player, and her prominent annoyance actually faded into comfortable enjoyment for me as a reader. I mean, the character herself was still as self-centered and bratty as ever, but it was written to play off extremely well with the other characters (mainly Liam and Gustav), which I found highly entertaining. Liam and Briar's "romantic" dynamic was explored, as well as Liam and Ella's. Rapunzel got more plot time, though still haunts the edges of the pages and still seems like a plot device. Hopefully by the third book she'll have a more pivotal role. Frederic seems to be having some deep-seated admiration for the girl (which is no surprise, considering the end of the first book), and that may set up some future conflict between him and Gustav, which I'd be interested in seeing. Duncan was a little short-changed as a character this time around, as the story focused more on Liam, Briar, Frederic, and some key villains. And as the story went along, although the plot was engaging, there were some inconsistencies in the story, such as characters disappearing in key scenes, etc. However, despite some minor qualms, the book was hilarious, enjoyable, and kept me engaged. And isn't that what really matters? I'll definitely be finishing the series.
