“The High Window,” the third novel by Raymond Chandler, seems much milder than his next novel, “Lady in the Lake,” as not quite so many people get knocked off and Marlowe is not yet quite as much a smart-as (aleck) as he would soon become. The novel is still quite convoluted, and those that would really like to follow the action closely might consider keeping a list of the characters as they keep piling up (with some being dead). I would say this was quite an enjoyable ride as it is just the second Chandler novel that I have read (I have seen 5 films based on Marlowe of which the best are “The Big Sleep,” “The Long Goodbye,” and “Murder My Sweet.”).
