If you like Nicholas Sparks books you will like this. It is Christmas and Jack is near death. His wife goes out in a raging blizzard to get his pain medication and dies in a car accident, leaving Jack and his three children to cope. Enter her parents who get Jack into hospice care and the children parcelled out to family members. Jack lingers on and, miraculously, begins to get better and goes into complete remission from an unnamed condition that is only known to be fatal. He wants his children back, fights for them, and takes them, along with his buddy from the armed services, to his wife's childhood home on the ocean in South Carolina. Here the real story of recovery, rebuilding and reconnecting take place. Actually quite predictable, but still a story that keeps you reading. I wouldn't call this great literature but it is a good summer novel, which for some sensitive readers will require a tissue or twenty.
