Why does WHAT'S YOUR RAASHEE rate only 4.8 on imdb, while FASHION gets 6.9? I find them comparable: both are about as realistic as Eddie Murphy's 1980s films, or Jim Carrey's 1990s films. WYR especially evokes COMING TO AMERICA, with its ridiculous gotta-marry-quick premise. I expected to tire of it quickly & move on to something else, and found I was only more interested as the film progressed. I think the reason imdb didn't rate it so well is because RAASHEE loudly celebrates its own silliness, where FASHION wants to be taken seriously. Take for example that Priyanka Chopra plays all 12 girls: the film acknowledges this fact, offers an almost-believable explanation, and simply moves on. But in between the details of plot, there are subtle & accurate comments on the many different kinds of problems & expectations of marriage -- never intrusively, just in passing, often comically but with a barb of truth. The depths are hinted rather than explored, but each has that quality of truth that echoes back over time. Add in Harman Baweja's likeable main character, and the result is a charming search-for-my-soulmate story that keeps things light enough for the mass audience, but like any good fairy tale, also lets us know that it knows more than it's saying. Parental detail: while most of the film is kid-friendly, be warned that Priyanka #11 will aggressively attempt to seduce the hapless protagonist (who is repulsed and leaves, but ti's still very much there).
