"A riveting psychological thriller inspired by the never-caught Zodiac Killer, about a young detective determined to apprehend the serial murderer who destroyed her family and terrorized a city twenty years earlier. Caitlin Hendrix has been a Narcotics detective for six months when the killer at the heart of all her childhood nightmares reemerges: the Prophet. An UNSUB--what the FBI calls an unknown subject--the Prophet terrorized the Bay Area in the 1990s and nearly destroyed her father, the lead investigator on the case. The Prophet's cryptic messages and mind games drove Detective Mack Hendrix to the brink of madness, and Mack's failure to solve the series of ritualized murders--eleven seemingly unconnected victims left with the ancient sign for Mercury etched into their flesh--was the final nail in the coffin for a once promising career. Twenty years later, two bodies are found bearing the haunting signature of the Prophet. Caitlin Hendrix has never escaped the shadow of her father's failure to protect their city. But now the ruthless madman is killing again and has set his sights on her, threatening to undermine the fragile barriershe rigidly maintains for her own protection, between relentless pursuit and dangerous obsession. Determined to decipher his twisted messages and stop the carnage, Caitlin ignores her father's warnings as she draws closer to the killer with each new gruesome murder. Is it a copycat, or can this really be the same Prophet who haunted her childhood? Will Caitlin avoid repeating her father's mistakes and redeem her family name, or will chasing the Prophet drag her and everyone she loves into the depths of the abyss?"-- Provided by publisher.

This was an intense thriller where the characters are in search of a serial killer. Lots of action and vivid descriptions of the action taking place. Looking forward to the next addition in this series.

The twist at the end of the book was too unbelievable for me, but I did enjoy the book. Her villain's character could have used some more development.

Meg Gardiner weaves a thrilling and engaging plot with dynamic prose, tight action, a frightening villain and concise dialogue. This is a fast-paced, easy read that isn't hard to follow. The protagonist, Caitlin Hendrix, captivated me, and I felt like her character and relationships developed nicely. That said, the surrounding characters are a tad cliche — as if Gardiner relied too heavily on "The Silence of the Lambs" and other dark tales for inspiration. All in all, "Unsub" is a smart, engrossing story with a fast start that keeps you entertained throughout.

pretty much hated this. timeframe seemed impossible, shallow characters, ending revealed way too early. cannot recommend.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller. It was dark and twisting with a tight, well-paced plot. The characters were engaging, and the villain frighteningly creative. I found myself completely swept up in the suspense as the plot progressed and the killer's plan unfolded. I'll be keeping an eye out for the next book in the series!

I am so happy that this is the first book in a new Meg Gardiner series! This genre is a departure from what I usually read, and I already cannot wait for the next book. Her characters are believable, her settings send chills down the reader's spine, and the quickly moving events don't allow you to see what is around the next curve. The cliffhanger at the end is totally unexpected, making it even more fun. I highly recommend this read.

I have heard many great things about this author, and as this was my first Meg Gardiner book, I was definitely not disappointed! Unsub was intense and frightening. The vivid descriptions made this novel beyond terrifying. It is so well-written that I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. The book was detailed, yet it got to the point and exceeded my expectations.

This is THE BEST book I have read by Meg Gardiner. Past readings included some books I really enjoyed and some not so much. I definitely recommend this book as it is vastly entertaining, well written and fast paced. Beware: it is nearly impossible to put down. I devoured it in one day, staying up way past my senior lady's bedtime!

This is a good book. It was entertaining, very readable, and held your interest throughout the novel. The Author's characters were well developed, descriptive and interesting I could actually see the characters in my mind. The book starts in present day but the author brought the past forward through the characters thought and actions. You know that the author really put thought and imagination into writing of this book. Excellent book!! Well done.
