A teenage girl has gone missing and everyone is called upon to join the search. The villagers fan out across the English moors as the police set up roadblocks and news reporters descend. Meanwhile, there is still work that must be done: cows milked, fences repaired, stone cut, pints poured, sermons written, a pantomime rehearsed. As the seasons unfold and the search for the missing girl goes on, there are those who leave the village and those who are pulled back; those who come together and those who break apart.

A young girl disappears in an English village and the mystery haunts the inhabitants for the decade or so after she goes missing. Written with short sentences and long flowing paragraphs, the book meanders through the lives of two dozen or so villagers - the lamb farmers, the potter, the newly-arrived yoga teacher, the school custodian, the newspaper editor and his BBC-producer wife, etc. - as their lives both follow and break routines over the years. Couples form and split up, babies are born, the reservoirs dry up and fill again, crops succeed and fail. Throughout it all, the memory of the missing girl hovers over everything.

One remarkable thing about the writing is that none of the characters are described physically (except the missing girl - repeatedly) and yet I developed clear and distinct pictures of them as the glimpses into their lives washed over me. One could even read this book as if it is told from the girl's point-of-view - her spirit floating just adjacent to the living, unable to fix on any corporeal details (or uninterested in doing so) ... just observing the mundane, the surprising, and even the profane events play out.

Set in the Peak District, this novel is a biography of a village and its characters over the years. It is remarkable in how it is written - it gives the effect of being carried along in a river as life goes on. Costa Prize.

A young girl and her family go on summer vacation to a small village in England. When they return at Christmas, their 13 old year daughter goes missing.
Days go by and even years with clues and investigations but the most interesting part of the story is how the villagers' lives change. People come and go, babies are born and people die while time keeps going on without this girl.
The most impacted aside from the girl's family are the other teens she knew in the village.
Surprise ending!

Rough notes toward, perhaps, a novel. Some day. Maybe.
