Rachel Weisz's talents are wasted in this muddy Gothic romance/possible murder mystery as she plays a femme fatale, newly arrived from Italy, who's suspected of poisoning her former husband. Lots of arguing that leads to nowhere. The two leads' romance is unconvincing and there's a misunderstanding of what they want from each other.

Ditto on a previous comment: "What was the point of resources being used to make this film"

Excellent film based on the book by Daphne Dumarier. Beautifully filmed, lovely costumes, great acting.

Have not read the book by Daphne Du Maurier, nor do I remember seeing the two previous depictions (1952 movie and a 1983 four part tv mini series).
Although there was impressive quality acting, I found the young English man to have been too easily misled under the charms of Rachel. It did not show enough of a transference from an accuser to falling in love, for me to care or have sympathy for this young man. Too brash and unlikable.
Rachel Weisz was again very impressive with her subtle and controlling role.

Read the book, I could not put it down. The movie does not do the book justice.

What was the point of resources being used to make this film which, while nice to look at and well-acted, was devoid of content?

Intriguing story with a twist. Rachel Weisz plays the part well.

We'd recommend this slightly, but not strongly. It just didn't have the impact we expected. The acting was good and the sets and costuming as well. It moved a tad slow (but that is expected) and built up, but the ending was not completely satisfying. We didn't see the original film, nor read the classic novel, so no idea how they compared. There are much better films in this genre out there.

As seems invariably the case, this remake of a 1952 Burton/De Havilland film is less satisfying. Perhaps there will never be a replacement for the old black and white efforts. Having said this, Rachel Weisz plays the black widow very well (the name co-incidence surely a lure to play the role) and the usual trimmings of costume, Victorian mansions, and Cornish countryside are all well manicured reminding this viewer of the current Poldark series. Interesting to read that Roger Ebert gives this a rating of 1/4 even though the poor chap has been gone for four years! Nice comment from a previous reviewer regards My Cousin Vinny. Alas I'd have to agree!

Don't read any of the old comments as too many tell too much of the story (read them after watching). Just watch it without knowing anything. I didn't understand the DVD cover photo until finishing the entire film. I was surprised to find out that this was a remake of a 1952 American film starring Richard Burton, etc. I plan to try to watch the original film to find out how much of the sexual and psycho-sexual stuff was eliminated to get past the Hays Code.
