"Bobby Kennedy was a personal hero to a multitude of Americans. As the train carrying his body headed to Washington, whites and blacks alike stood along the tracks, saluting him. They loved him as a fellow patriot who believed a great country could also be a good one. Chris Matthews, the host of MSNBC's Hardball, has discovered what made him who he was...Drawing on extensive research and intimate interviews, Matthews shines a light on all the important moments of Bobby's life: his upbringing, his start in politics, his crucial role fighting for civil rights as attorney general, and his tragic run for president."--Dust jacket flap.

Excellent Book . Highly Recommended . I have enjoyed every single one of Chris Matthews' works and this tome is by far his absolute best . Then again , one can not go wrong writing about Robert Francis Kennedy ( ... a personal favorite of mine ) . The ' Mutual Contempt ' between Lyndon Johnson and Bobby Kennedy defined the 1960's Decade ( ... for better and for worse ) . Indeed , their hatred towards each other becomes quite interesting as a surprising amount of what Johnson did was in reaction to what he thought Bobby Kennedy would do if he was the President . Would RFK have captured the 1968 Democratic Nomination ? Matthews' makes it quite clear that Humphrey's backroom machinations and consummate deal - making might very well have denied RFK the eventual Prize .

Haven't read this yet but I'll bet anything Matthews doesn't mention that it was Bobby, as President John F. Kennedy's attorney general, who halted the deportation of dissident Iranian students back to Iran for torture or worse by the Shah's SAVAK. [Which circumstantial evidence points to having figured into his assassination - - Lucien Conein trained them and the Iranian special forces between 1960 to 1962.]
I could be wrong, I am far from perfect, but Matthews has proven to be a mediocre author and less than that as a researcher.
