Ghost in the Shell was a decent movie. However, it just wasn't as action packed or eye riveting as I thought it would be. The trailer made it seem like it would be very intense but it was not as exciting. Johansson acted well, but she did not fit into the character of Major that well. It did get better towards the end, but I felt it was just a bit too slow getting there.

Visually great but I would have enjoyed it if they had given another actress a chance to play the lead role. I am a ScarJo fan but I am getting tired of seeing her in these movies and not getting the Black Widow movie that we all deserve!!

This movie has a lot of criticism surrounding the acting choices, while ignoring the actual movie itself. I wouldn't trust a lot of Rotten Tomatoes ratings, as a slew of people rated it a low score without ever touching the movie. As a stand-alone movie, it's not bad. I wouldn't say it was without fault simply because they decided to go a different direction from the original while keeping similar scenes, which left it feeling a little disjointed and broken up. The real joy of the movie comes from the director's obvious love for the original film, making sure the opening scene of the movie was as cinematically close as possible to the original while being a live-action feature film. The actresses and actors all look strikingly like their animated counter-parts (the first half of the movie I was screaming "WHERE ARE BALTO'S EYES" and felt extreme relief when they added them in), and I think the film, while not perfect, did the series justice as an American adaptation.

Not the best Johansson has done but okay.

A visually impressive addition to the Ghost in the Shell franchise, this entry--while telling a new story--keeps very true to the themes that underlie all of the Ghost in the Shell incarnations. I grant that some of my enjoyment of the movie is probably nostalgic, but I loved that they took pains to incorporate a myriad of little nods--and a few big ones--to its franchise siblings, without just recreating one of the existing stories. I also appreciated that there were in-story explanations for concerns I heard voiced after the trailer dropped, such as Batou's eyes, and the Major's ethnicity.

wow was that a disappointment! Casting has to take a hit here, this film was not for Johanson and it showed, not her best work. Noomi Rapace should have gotten this role. Too bad it misses the mark

Its is a pretty interesting movie. I realized that what the movie is trying to tell us is to warn us that the technology nowadays is very high-tech that in the future it will rule over us and we can not control it anymore. The CG is pretty good, and Scarlett Johansson is bad-ass. Overall, the movie is worth-to-watch if you want to see an action-flick movie.

Without Scarlett Johansson this would just be another martial arts / CGI movie.
The opportunity to see Scarlett Johansson nearly nude in several scenes really doesn't make
up the for the lack of plot, bad CGI and exploitation of the tech industry.
I mean really, the holograms are rampant along with eye blistering CGI graphics that constantly run in the background of every scene.
Okay, in the vast future we can teleport our minds & send holographic images across dimensions, and create life like sensient beings but we still use gun powder to propel metal projectiles called bullets out of a clunky hand held gun in the future? And still miss out targets again and again and again, yawn ;-O.
This film is a Scarlet Johansen vehicle funded by the emerging enterprises of Chinese hollywood backers. If you want to see an over-the-top CGI martial arts film, this is for you. If you otherwise want to see Scarlett Johanssn in epic roles watch: "Lucy" or "Under The Skin".

Slower paced in some parts but still an action movie. Not my type of movie though. Not my choice of topic for an action movie. Just didn't do it for me!

Ghost in a Shell does a better job of making a live action version of the anime than I would have expected. As many other reviewers stated, the movie is visually amazing. If you are a fan of Cyberpunk dystopian futures, you will love the overall look of this movie. Aside from that, there isn't anything amazing about this adaptation. It isn't epic or mindblowing, but it is good, and that's good enough for me to enjoy it. If you twisted my arm for a complaint, I would say that it was kinda of 'meh'. The GITS manga was released almost 30 years ago, and the anime was released more than 20 years ago. The story is also something we've seen before: Cyborg super soldier discovers their mysterious origins are tied to a current case they're working on. That isn't bad, its just not new. The overall movie would have benefitted immensely if it was rated R instead of PG.

Find many memorable quotes in IMDb already, these two in particular:

You are more than just a weapon. You have a soul... a ghost. When we see our uniqueness as a virtue, only then will we find peace.
We cling to memories as if they define us, but... they really don't. What we do is what defines us.
