1. this is the first film that i saw from director park chan-wook. i am impressed w/ his film style & techniques that admittedly have propelled him & korean cinema to a world-class status.
2. the acting for all 3 main characters are delivered superbly. the pace & fluidity of the storytelling are outstanding among asian drama films.
3. are the sexually explicit scenes too offensive & unnecessary? i don’t think so. contrarily, these scenes that involved the handmaiden & her lady have created sensual & erotic feelings that are fitting to the story. they both have not been exposed to intimacy or sexuality until their encounter in their respective roles in the story. it is their mutual erotic relationship that ultimately changed the ending of the conman's scheme. despite being graphic & intense, the scenes are composed w/ a gradual & emotional push, more so than other sexual scenes in french or italian films (whether now or 1970’s).
4. then i learned more about the director from wikipedia. this latest film certainly would affirm again his status of “acclaimed”, “award-winning” or “top director” in global cinema.

Deviant & creepy & definitely soft core porn under the guise of an art film...if you're into S & M ... then this is right down your alley. A lot of better erotic films are out ... this is not one of them.

This film started off slow but really drew you in as you watched because you just had to see what would happen next. Really awesome picture!

I almost turned this off but I'm glad I watched it all the way thru. Very unusual movie with sex scenes that stop just short of porn. Good twists and laying out of the story into three chapters.

Another subtitle movie, it's like watching Charlie Chaplin, I pulled out of it within minutes. to me, this is not what movies are about. If you want to read you get yourself a book.

Disguised as an elaborate con movie, this erotica is in fact a deadly multi-layered battle among two sexual predators and a pair of helpless prey. For mature audience only for graphic sexual content!

From wiki: The Handmaiden (Hangul: 아가씨; RR: Agassi; lit. "Lady") is a 2016 South Korean erotic psychological thriller film directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo and Cho Jin-woong. It is inspired from the novel Fingersmith by Welsh writer Sarah Waters, with the setting changed from Victorian era Britain to Korea under Japanese colonial rule.

The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. It was released in South Korea on 1 June 2016, and received critical acclaim. Director Park Chan-wook won the Daesang award (film section) at the 53rd Baeksang Arts Awards for the film.

Let's get a couple things straight: this is not a sanitized Hollywood movie; it is filled with Korean cinema's blood, sweat and tears. And it is a Gothic film, based on a 21st century Gothic novel, which parodied some of the wilder 19th century Gothic novels. As such, it is the type of elaborate, decadent story that Park Chan-Wook loves directing; he and his actors are obviously having a lot of fun. True, it is a touch long, and more than a touch exploitative, especially towards the end. But The Handmaiden is a film that must be watched with attention, both because of the many plot twists, and because it is so beautifully made you will not be able to tear your eyes away.

Excellent movie. NOT FAMILY VIEWING. NOT FOR TEENS INTO K-POP. This is a very adult movie.
Several disturbing scenes but they're important to the story.
An excellent adaptation of Fingersmith.

Not sure if someone has already covered this topic, but I found the English title for this movie to be very confusing. This film is based on the Sarah Waters' novel "Fingersmith" and not Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale". I loved Waters' book and was happy that such an incredible director received vision and inspiration from it. I did not like the film adaptation as much as I wanted to, mainly because I liked the book so much more but also because I felt the lesbian scenes were done in a way that would gratify a male dominated audience, not as an essential part of the passion in the story. Same old same old when it comes to that stuff though, right?

As much as I have enjoyed Parks films, this one didnt do it for me. I found it to be completely boring and slow, although beautiful to view as always, it just took too long to go where I knew it was going, and I lost interest....I tried twice, but ended up ffwd the last 30 minutes or so just to get to the end ...disappointment to say the least

Quite a few quotes in IMDb, but not this one:

The dirty scoundrel:

Me, a colonial boy working as a tout at a brothel. Some Englishmen who frequented
the brothel recognized me. I thought they'd call the maître d' and kick me out, but what do you know? They were amused I'd spend a month's pay on one dignified meal. They started calling me 'Count' and taught me manners to go with the name. Frankly, I'm not that interested in money itself. What I desire is, how shall I put it... The manner of ordering wine without looking at the price? Something like that.
