Constance Kopp is a deputy sheriff and loves it. She doesn't have a badge yet--but she does have a gun. She and the sheriff go to the hospital so she can interview a prisoner who is insisting on speaking German only. While she is there, he escapes. The escape hits the papers and she realizes not only that her job is at risk, but the sheriff could go to jail. She knows almost nothing about the escaped prisoner or how to find him, but she is determined to try. A couple of people make suggestions, and she's off, detecting what happened to him.

Watch for the women she meets at the Mandarin, a women's hotel in New York City, as well as her interactions with the women prisoners at the jail. Her sisters are as delightfully quirky as they were in the first book. Much of this book is based on newspaper accounts, and the historical notes at the end are very interesting.

I hope to read many more books about the Kopp sisters.

Wonderfully witty series based on the true life of Constance Kopp, New Jersey's first female sheriff's deputy at the turn of the 20th century. Up against the stigma of being a working woman who defies the conventions of her day, she manages to catch the bad guys right alongside Sheriff Heath. There are four books in the series to this point, hopefully many more to come.

I could see why protagonist destined to be in law enforcement instead of department store detective given she's 6 feet tall & weigh 180lbs in offbeat series.
Novel more meatier than first.

Book 2 is slightly shorter than Books 1 and 3, but the most suspenseful of all. Constance's job is on the line and there is a slippery and dangerous fugitive that she feels responsible for, not only for her job, but also for keeping Sheriff Heath's reputation and job intact. This is a clever and well-developed series based on historical facts and most delightful.

Great historical fiction based on the first female deputy sheriff in the 1910’s. I always look forward to the afterword by the author telling how she came up with the storyline.

I really enjoyed the development of Constance's career within the police department, and her issues with self identity as a single woman during the period. I was thankful for some much needed character development in this volume. I'm looking forward to their future adventures!

I found the sequel as entertaining as "Girl Waits with Gun". Constance Kopp is shaken when the Sheriff tells her that a legal question has arisen concerning her status as one of this deputies. In this title, Constance must track a fugitive to try to save her post - and like every police officer, finds herself trying to keep up with more than one mystery at a time. Police procedural (sorta), circa 1915.

" he's a man of limited intellect, and if he had more than one idea at a time they'd die from overcrowding."
Amy Stewart gives the Kopp sisters great lines.

Constance Kopp, as one of the characters remarks, is aptly named. Sheriff Heath is having difficulty getting her a position as a deputy with a badge and the right to arrest criminals. Her situation as the breadwinner of her family is in jeopardy when a train wreck and an electrical outage in an unfamiliar hospital enables a prisoner she's guarding to escape. Sheriff Heath, according to the law of the time, faces prosecution for allowing a jail inmate to escape; so, in order to be sure he keeps his job and, therefore, she can keep her job, her sisters encourage Constance to catch the criminal herself. The result is a highly engaging second book in the series based on research by the author, who has written several nonfiction books. Stewart lives in Northern California, where she and her husband run a bookstore.
