I needed a fun romance novel to read on vacation and this one didn't disappoint! I loved the story and Violet, Lincoln and Phoenix. It was interesting and I couldn't put it down. Well written and easy to read. Highly recommend! Just started the second book too :)

(This review is more about the series than the first book, but no spoilers)
A great entrance into a new YA series.

This is a great series, although I do find some occasional “plot holes” and other elements that contradict what I think. At first, when the author introduced an idea I already knew of from a more popular series (*cough* The Mortal Instruments), I was ready to put down the book and complain about copying, but as I read on, the idea got more original and more focused. As I found myself reading the last book in this series, I stopped comparing the two serieses and was really drawn toward the conclusion (which didn’t make me want to rip my heart out like almost every other end of a series did).

The author told us herself in the preface that she likes flawed characters, not perfect ones, and in the first two books, she showed that. In the other three books however, the main character is overpowered, and like a lot of other op characters I’ve seen, she has to “endure much more pain than they can handle” (which is a cliché I see often) and make all the difficult decisions.

One thing I notice is that when I’m trying to check out a book that’s YAF, or some other genre, romance always comes along with the territory. In this series, I like that the love-triangle idea isn’t as common, and the first love interest isn’t the one that works out immediately.

I mainly chose this book because the author seems to be great at many story elements, including showing, not telling, dialogue tags, and sensory details, as well as defining the plot. The author is also really good at characterization and making it “matter”. At times, the author really emphasizes certain details, including the theme, trust is necessary.

The only thing I didn’t really like in this book was the summary. It wasn’t exactly accurate, and because I read summaries before picking up books, it didn’t appeal to me at first and I waited some time to read it. Then I realized that the summaries didn’t really matter, and that I’d get hooked into whatever book I was reading, regardless of its age level or summary so I finally picked it up, and sometimes the cliffhangers killed me, but I’m proud to say that I survived reading this series and couldn’t put it down until the very end.

Personally I did like this book for the most part but with Phoenix entering her life and she's not even aware of what he was doing to her... it was off putting, especially since she spent the entire book hating Lincoln and feeling BAD for Phoenix, who manipulated her.

Jessica Shirvington out did herself in making sure it was a book you wouldn’t want to put down. embrace is the perfect fantasy novel. Action, suspense, romance, emotion…the book really has it all. I recommend it to anyone 15+. It The beautiful cover is what drew me to the book, as books with nice covers tend to be good stories and I was right. I originally picked up the third book and was quickly able to piece together what was going on in the book. I was intimidated by the size of the books but was so enthralled that I finished the book in 2 days. was amazingly written and I love how strong all the characters are; In particular, the main character. In the beginning she is unaccepting of the news that she has received but, as she comes to terms with her new gift and unattainable romance she becomes a stronger dangerous character. Although things didn’t end up how I wanted them to (with phoenix) the constant change and adventures didn’t disappoint. The plot twist sucked me in and had me feeling exactly what all the characters were feeling. In my opinion this book is a must read. There are 5 books in the series and all of them kept me enticed, so read this book AND the rest of the series its one of the best of not the best of its year.

This is a novel about a teenaged protagonist that annoys more than enthralls. All adolescents are prey to the wayward whims of their hormones. But for a girl who prides herself on standing up to her problems and not quitting, Violet certainly does a lot of the opposite.

She shows little understanding when she realizes that a trusted friend has been hiding things about himself. She’s all too willing to place trust in one of the very people she is warned against, a typically arrogant, smirking, smoking hot guy who has “bad boy” written all over him in very loud expositional type. When her feelings go yawing out of control, she doesn’t even stop to consider that just maybe she’s being manipulated—by the same said bad boy who’s admitted that he’s an empath, capable of controlling emotions—or that he’s lied to her more than once.

“Embrace” deserves points for originality in not having the supposed love interest run on predictable tracks. Which boy will get the girl isn’t clear at this juncture and that raises it a slight notch above typical teen fare.

As to the supernatural element—well, the whole business about Grigoris, exiles, trials and myths, while unusual, is just a bit too confusing to be readable. The blurry lines between good and evil don’t get blurred very much or very often; it’s hard not to see evil in a character that insists on ruling weak-willed humans and another that gets satisfaction from butchering them in imaginative ways. Violet gets injured, attacked and rendered helpless too often to be an estimable or credible heroine but I’m willing to be lenient on this aspect since she’s very new to her role as supernatural fighter to be capable.

While this series has potential to be a worthy player in the supernatural field, this initial entry is too lacking for me to recommend it wholeheartedly.

I liked the concept of the book but I didn't really see how this book is good, mainly because of Violet who is a selfish and whiny character.

I know many people do no like this series, but I can honestly say this is one of the best series I have ever read - it left me sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for more.
