Add a CommentAs a children’s librarian, I enjoy reading a lot of kids’ books, and one of my favorite picture book authors is Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Imagine my delight when I discovered that not only does she write for children, but she has also published for adults! The title of this book could not be more fitting, in more ways than one. First, she shares her thoughts on life in a format similar to that of a textbook (or maybe an encyclopedia). Secondly, if you knew her at all (and you will feel like you do by the end of this book), you would find that the thoughts she shares and the way she expresses them truly are “textbook Amy.” And thirdly, there is an interactive texting component to her book! Certain parts of the book call for you to send a text. You will receive a text back connecting you to a website. You can share your own experiences and thoughts, post pictures, even connect with other Amy fans. You will also be connected to a Youtube video she made in which she enlisted a bunch of normal people to help her pull off a moving (literally and figuratively) work of art. Amy (and after reading her books I do feel like I’m on a first-name basis with her), spent a lot of time in her life thinking and writing about serendipity and living life to its fullest. Unfortunately, she died at a young age last year and I felt like I lost a friend.
Amy Krouse Rosenthal was hilarious in the way she approached anxieties and self-deprecation. She was also daring in the construction of her books. I loved this title and her other book, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life.
Another uniquely constructed memoir from this most interesting author. Given the year of publication (2016) and her death in March 2017, and the topics of the final chapters, I gather that she knew she was terminally ill. What a loss.
I really enjoyed Amy Krouse's TEDx talk, but I couldn't get into this very eclectic book.
