When a white rancher and a young Native American woman are found murdered on a remote part of the rancher's land a decade after Wounded Knee, the scattered members of his family gather to investigate and expose damning secrets. "The award-winning author of The River Wife returns with a multi-generational family saga, set in the unforgiving Nebraska Sandhills in the years following the massacre at Wounded Knee--an ambitious tale of history, vengeance, race, guilt, betrayal, family, and belonging, filled with a vivid cast of characters shaped by violence, love, and a desperate loyalty to the land"-- Provided by publisher.
Part Greek tragedy, Western, family saga, and murder mystery this literary historical novel evokes the beauty of the Nebraska Sand Hills. Booklist and Kirkus starred reviews.
Well-done Western saga that follows the tragedies of a family living in the Sand Dune Hills of Nebraska in the years after the massacre at Wounded Knee. Author Jonis Agee shines most through the unique voices she gives her characters, helping to bring the story and world its set in to life.
Great western saga. Tragedy and brutality. The slaughtering of innocent native American women and children. The harsh life in Nebraska. A dysfunctional family. This book has it all.
Well-done Western saga that follows the tragedies of a family living in the Sand Dune Hills of Nebraska in the years after the massacre at Wounded Knee.
The story gripped me in the first-third and then again in the last several chapters, but the middle dragged a bit, which is why I'm not giving it a higher rating. I did generally enjoy the voice Jonis Agee gives her characters and would try another book from her.
Good western saga. Not a quick or easy read, but a deep read with strong characters - both likeable and unlikeable. The book cover describes it best - a mystery, a tragedy, a romance, an exploration of the beauty and brutality, tenderness and cruelty of the American West. I liked it.
