The assassination of one president, the resignation of another, and the swearing-in of the two who followed those traumatic events. Clint Hill was there, on duty, through Five Presidents.
After an extraordinary career as a Special Agent on the White House Detail, Clint Hill retired in 1975. His career spanned the administrations of Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford. A witness to some of the most pivotal moments in the twentieth century, Hill lets you walk in his shoes alongside the most powerful men in the world during tumultuous times in America&;s history&;the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Vice President Spiro Agnew and President Nixon.
It was indeed a turbulent time&;and through it all, Clint Hill had a unique insider perspective. His fascinating stories will shed new light on the character and personality of each of these five presidents, as Hill witnesses their human sides in the face of grave decisions.

Add a CommentA well-written narrative about Mr. Hill’s long career serving 5 different presidents. The review of history from a much-closer-to-the-action-of-the-moment viewpoint was fascinating. It is awesome that the Secret Service willingly puts their lives on the line to protect the President, who may or may not be aware or appreciative of the burden of the job. I will definitely want to read his other book, Mrs. Kennedy and Me.
Extraordinary. From Kennedy's assassination and LBJ's swearing in to the Apollo 11 launch and Nixon's farewell, a fascinating account from a man who was an eye witness to more historic 20th century American moments than probably any other human being. Highly recommend.
Very well written and easy to read. So many little stories about five Presidents who shaped post WWII America and policy. Worth the time to read.
Nice everyman memoir on an overworked underappreciated government worker assigned to protect the President 24/7 with United States or overseas that affected his family life & his health.
It also highlighted the evolution & expansion of the secret service, historical events big or small & the quirks of the presidents, their wives & the vice presidents.
Big huh on President Johnson apologizing to Secret service on verbally abusing them on their work & going to wherever without advance warning.
Gave a more human picture of vice president Spiro Agnew before he was charged & jailed.
Revealing insight into five wildly different Presidents' character. Some of it is predictable: Kennedy was warm, Nixon ice-cold, LBJ cantankerous and unpredictable. But who knew Ike had a serious addiction? Playing 18 holes of golf 12 straight days. Or that Spiro Agnew was actually fun, charming and inclusive? Good stuff here.
I really enjoyed this book. Lots of behind the scenes information about the presidents and Secret Service procedures. Mr. Hill's anguish over the Kennedy assassination was vividly described.
