I was wrong about who would be the Demdji, so that was a nice surprise. Fairly predictable plot overall, but the desert and magic twists are great and I look forward to the next book.

I loved this book! The images created were so vivid, this book made me feel as if I was actually experiencing Amani's world right through her bright, blue eyes. Even though this book is part of a series, it works well as a standalone book. I loved the way the author mixed myth with reality into a nicely written adventure story.

I really liked this book! I have always said that I’m not much of a fantasy person but apparently my genre of fantasy is a western set in a magical eastern setting.

The heroin was ruthless and gunslinging which I liked. The hero was witty and feisty and tattooed.

Their romance (although predictable...it’s YA after all) wasn’t mushy and sappy which I appreciated.

There were trains and magic and trekking across the desert and middle eastern clothes and magic and gunslinging and cross dressing.

I think I’ll read the next 2 books. :)

Arabian Nights meets classic Western in this intriguing fantasy debut about an orphaned girl who knows how to handle a gun and longs to escape her judgmental, claustrophobic hometown. Fans of "Walk on Earth a Stranger" will enjoy some similar plot elements, and the similar mashup of western and fantasy elements.

I thought the world Alwyn Hamilton created was awesome! I like fantasy stories about genies/djinnis because they aren't very common. Amani is a very strong female character and I like her determination. There are several interesting side characters that I hope are explored more in the other books. I am excited to see what happens next.

Old west meets ancient middle east in this exhilarating and fresh new series. We first meet the fiery Amani Al'Hiza as she attempts to escape from a future she doesn't desire. Dressed as a boy, she enters a gunslinging competition, where she meets a smooth-talking, yet principled foreigner. Her plans go awry almost immediately, and continue to do so quite often afterwards, but she is able to roll with the punches, thanks to her quick wits, and clean shot. Together with her mysterious companion Jin, she makes her way across the desert, while fleeing and fighting an increasing amount of enemies, moving ever towards her destiny.

Amani's inner journey is just as riveting as her external one, for as she is exposed to more of the world, she discovers that there is more to herself than even she knew, and, that there is a cause she is willing to fight for. There is also the chemistry that she has with Jin. While their relationship is fascinating to observe right from the start, thanks to the author's brilliant hand at writing banter, it only becomes more so as they develop a better understanding and respect for one another.

In this Fantasy series, magic hovers at the edges of its pre-industrial age society in the form of stories, religion, and beings such as the Buraqi. As the story progresses though, it seeps ever more gradually into our purview, matching Amani's changing perspective of the world around her. Hamilton thoroughly lays out the groundwork for the setting, characters, and story, so, when a truth finally comes to light, it makes sense, because all the clues were there in the stories, and memories. In addition to this, her style gives her the opportunity to explore themes like women's roles in society a fair bit.

From its backstabbing politics to its tantalizing mythos, Hamilton deftly weaves the details into an fast-paced, action-driven story. Her rebellious characters hold our attention completely as they grow and interact with one another in ever more interesting ways, and her world already promises that there is much more to come. Pick up volume two right away.

I loved Amani's journey and her struggles with where she grew up. I love how her view of life broadened from self-centered to having a greater purpose.

This revolution was a legend in the making. The kind of tale that sprawled out long before me and far beyond my reach. The sort of epic that was told over and over to explain how the world was never the same after this handful of people lived and fought and won or died trying. And after it happened, the story seemed somehow inevitable. Like the world was waiting to be changed, needing to be saved, and the players in the tale were all plucked out of their lives and moved into places exactly where they needed to be, like pieces on a board, just to make this story come true. But it was wilder and more terrifying and intoxicating, and more uncertain, than I’d ever thought. And I could be part of it. If I wanted to. It was getting way too late to rip myself out of this story now, or to rip it out of me.
