When three children found a strange creature sleeping in their backyard tree, they were mystified. What was it, and from where had it come? It certainly didn’t resemble any other creature in their neighbourhood.
The children imagined all sorts of possibilities. Could it be a disguised elephant, bear, pirate, knight, astronaut, or even an alien from space?
For one reason or another, they realized that none of these ideas could be the answer.
Meanwhile, the creature continued to sleep peacefully.
The children consulted some books. In a book about rainforests, one of them found the answer. The creature was a sloth!
In the book they discovered many things about sloths and why they are so well suited to their rainforest habitat.
There was only one thing to do. The sloth, still sleeping soundly, was removed from the tree and packed up in a large box - complete with leaves to eat and toys for the journey - and mailed back to the rainforest.
The children were happy to know that the sloth would wake up in the home where he belonged.
Or so they thought!
However, the surprise ending reveals – as do many clues through the story - that the sloth was still not “home”. Instead, it had actually escaped from the local zoo!
With its large cut-paper collage artwork, this clever picture book will both amuse and inform young readers and listeners about an animal which is probably quite unfamiliar to them.
