I confess I didn't read the entire book just the stories of the people I was interested in.

Don't worry, Bill just wrote the introduction. This book is a series of biographical sketches of famous western figures from Daniel Boone to Butch Cassidy. The sketches the famous legends of these people and the known facts with an overview of what is possible, plausible and unlikely about their feats. The legends they inspired in their own times and how the legends have changed over time are also discussed. A good short introduction to some famous americans if you want to skip lengthy bios.
