"Flavia de Luce--"part Harriet the Spy, part Violet Baudelaire from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" (The New York Times Book Review)--takes her remarkable sleuthing prowess to the unexpectedly unsavory world of Canadian boarding schools in the captivating new mystery from New York Times bestselling author Alan Bradley"-- Provided by publisher. "Flavia rules! In this New York Times bestselling series of enchanting mysteries, youthful chemist and aspiring detective Flavia de Luce once again brings her knowledge of poisons and her indefatigable spirit to solve dastardly crimes -- but this time, she leaves behind her beloved English countryside, and takes her sleuthing prowess to the unexpectedly unsavory world of Canadian boarding schools!"-- Provided by publisher.
I listened to the audiobook which was very enjoyable. The narrator captures perfectly Flavia's precocious self-confidence (and the troubles it gets her into!) A 'young adults' mystery story of the Nancy Drew variety. I found it to be very witty and quite entertaining.
I was so happy to find this audio book (rather than a hardcover) to listen while I was travelling! The narrator is great! Having read the first 3 or so in this series, I didn't think it mattered if I skipped around b/c the next few weren't available, and Flavia is such a great character. I did wish I read the one just prior though (The Dead in their Vaulted Arches), because of the storyline and the reason for her being at Miss Bodycotes. Be sure to read that one first...still I loved it, and love Flavia!
Another fun audio for the commute. I must say that I missed Buckshaw and the people of Bishop's Lacey but this was a fun story, none the less.
The story itself was interesting. I've got a few questions of "Why?" but am sure they will be cleared up.
I'm not sure if I like the storyline of the Nides; perhaps a bit too secretive for a little girl.
But, as always, a fun story and I enjoyed my time with Flavia.
I adore Flavia de Luce. I want to BE Flavia. The writing is so marvelous, that I would go back and listen, just to get a good belly laugh. And bless Jayne EntwistleI She has become my favorite narrator.
Long live Flavia!
Always a joy to read books in this series. I particularly enjoy the narration of Jane Entwhistle, who is probably the best audio reader I've ever heard. She recently won an award for this. Here we see new development as Flavia is on her own at Miss Bodycote's school in Toronto. Some interesting characters and much more character development for Flavia, but I really missed Bishop's Lacey and Buckshore--so does our Flavia. Still, all in all, a delightful read.
