"In the years leading up to World War II, two families who seemingly could't be more different find that they have more in common than they could have imagined. Simon is a bookish dreamer from a working-class family in rural Sweden; Isak is the son of wealthy Jewish immigrants fleeing religious persecution in Berlin. While Simon yearns for the music, literature and art that are part of Isak's daily life, Isak finds comfort and security in Simon's more rustic existence. When Isak's family needs to find refuge from the anti-Semitism building in Sweden, the two families slowly merge, connecting in unexpected ways that threaten to both bring them closer together, and tear them apart. Suspenseful, moving and inspiring" -- Container.

This is a 2011 Swedish drama directed by Lisa Ohlin, based on a 1985 novel with the same name by Marianne Fredriksson.
Growing up in a working-class family on the outskirts of Gothenburg during World War II, Simon always felt different.
Against his parents' approval, he seeks education in the arts, normally not attended by members of the working class.
There he meets Isak, the son of a wealthy Jewish bookseller who fled persecution in Nazi Germany.
The lives of the two boys and their families intertwine as the war rages in Europe.
It is an emotionally driven, suspenseful and thought-provoking drama with uncanny twists and turns.

This was a wonderful film. German and Swedish language. Very emotional towards the end. The actors were well cast and the orchestral and violin music was great. I got a little tearful at the end.

The first half of the film deals with the Nazi threats against Jews living in Scandinavia and the non-Jews that harbor them. This part was very, very good. Then there seemed to be a ten minute lull, where I wasn’t so sure how good the film was. But believe me, the second half almost seemed like a second story. And boy, this second story just blew me away! It is so good to come away from a film, just overwhelmed with emotion. If you like this film, get The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and see if you get the same effect. The star, Bill skarsgard, is the son of the famous Swedish actor, Stellan Skarsgard. A little more than 50% of the critics loved the film, but the other critics thought it was a little soapy. Maybe I am just a sucker for this kind of film.
