"Ann Cleeves returns to her critically acclaimed Shetland Island series with this stunning mystery featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, who readers will remember from Raven Black, White Nights, Red Bones, and Blue Lightning. When the body of a journalist is found, Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted from outside to head up the investigation. Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out of the loop, but his local knowledge is needed in this case, and he decides to help Willow. The dead journalist had left the islands years before to pursue his writing career. In his wake, he left a scandal involving a young girl. When Willow and Jimmy dig deeper, they realize that the journalist was chasing a story that many Shetlanders didn't want to come to the surface. In Dead Water, a triumphant continuation to her Shetland series, Ann Cleeves cements her place as one of Britain's most successful crime writers. "-- Provided by publisher.

I appreciate the description of the land and people. I was so enamored with Shetland that I got out a book on the islands. Ann Cleaves gives good character depth so you get to really understand the people.

I haven't read Ann Cleeves' Shetland series in any order. It makes no difference. An excellent series and Dead Water is no exception.

The fifth book in the Shetland series

Set in Shetland, this novel uses both DI Jimmy Perez, recovering from the death of his fiancee, and Willow Reeves to solve 2 murders which seem to be related to the prospect of renewable energy plants to be built in the community. Be prepared for many villagers' names and the names of small communities where the detectives interview possible suspects and witnesses. Good plot with clues thrown in every once in a while to keep the action moving. Everything is explained in full detail at the end as the DIs rehash the motives for the murders and how it was done. It was the first Shetland book in the series I read and it did not matter to me not to have read the preceeding novels in that series.

Cleeves deepens our knowledge of Perez and Rhona Laing and adds Willow Reeves to the sustaining cast of characters. The number of people keeping secrets made the mystery difficult to untangle, so the identity of the murderer was unexpected, but logical, which is what kept me turning the pages, although Jimmy Perez was a rather depressing character in this book. He's still recovering from having his fiancée killed by a psychopath, so that's realistic, but his actions, although explainable, make everyone around him off balance, not knowing what to expect from him--and he's not enlightening them, either. I'm looking forward to the next book, though, since I've become involved with the characters and the paths through the clues and the solutions to the mysteries are always absorbing.

For those of you who enjoy this character (as do I) Knowledge Network will be airing this series starting Oct.5. Enjoy

Another engrossing entry in this great series. Love the Shetland Island setting where the weather acts as a virtual character: foggy during a murder, drizzly during lulls in the investigation, lashing rain during action/danger and sunny and warm at resolution. Jimmy Perez, life on hold after the death of Fran, stirs back to life himself when his help is needed to solve two murders. Also, a new inspector from Inverness adds an interesting thread. I hope Cleeves continues this series.

I was so looking forward to reading this especially since it is being made as a t.v. Drama in Britain. Such a promising start, then the plot got slower and slower to the point I was skipping whole paragraphs. I certainly hope the people making the movie can inject a little more life into the story and not rely on shots of the Shetlands.
