Excellent introduction to the larger series, with a new, younger actor playing the role of Salvo (the cutely scruffy Michele Riondino, as opposed to Luca Zingaretti, who plays him at an older age) . He is newly assigned to his childhood home of Vigata. Shows the detective as he starts off his career--sometimes in a most awkward manner. Mimi asks him "Are you really this much of a bast*rd, or is it an act?" These first three shows usher in his long-standing friendships: Fazio (both senior and junior) Mimi, the name-dyslexic Caterella, his cook, Adelina, his estranged dad, etc.; his love of fine food; and how he scored his beachside apt.

Astonishingly sweet start to his romantic relationship with Livia as he accepts her assistance with a case. She intuits he does really like her and she patiently waits for the right moment.

There's the usual conservative Sicilian culture effect on gender roles, which are more restrictive than other parts of the world. There's no female police officers, for example, and Mimi hits up nearly every woman he encounters (including Livia), which is played well for laughs. The Mafia is established as a major adversary that will, over the series, throw an outsized influence and in one plotline, administers its own form of justice to a clan member.

Young Montalbano had solved 3 cases in this drama. He is a charming, pleasant and cute young man. The food showed in the film looked very yummy and healthy. The film was taken in the beautiful Sicilian Town.
I will continue to watch Episode 4 - 6. Worth watching.

Intelligent, and with interesting insights into the Italian character. I got these to practice understanding spoken Italian, and was enchanted by them. And I really like that the characters show a broad range of how people look -- not everybody is pretty. Very worthwhile.

I thought this was a great series. Loved it very much. It takes a little bit to get to used to the subtitles but well worth it.

For a TV detective show these are really good, and the stories aren't bad either although they're not the ones in the books. Young Montalbano is so good looking and these stories are a bit gentler than the ones in the books.
