When a college graduate with a history of hapless jobs (ice cream scooper; gift wrapper; laziest ever part-time clerk at The Pet Library) reads Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island, she is dumbstruck by the timid design of her life. When had she ever dreamed a scheme? When had she ever done a foolish, overbold act? When had she ever, like Jim Hawkins, broke from her friends, raced for the beach, stolen a boat, killed a man, and eliminated an obstacle that stood in the way of her getting a hunk of gold?

Convinced that Stevenson's book is cosmically intended for her, she redesigns her life according to its Core Values: boldness, resolution, independence and horn-blowing. Accompanied by her mother, her sister, and a hostile Amazon parrot that refuses to follow the script, our heroine embarks on a domestic adventure more frightening than anything she'd originally planned.

Treasure Island!!! is the story of a ferocious obsession, told by an original voice-intelligent, perverse, relentlessly self- extricating, and funny.

I thought this was going to be really funny. I had too hard a time buying into the idea of the lead character being so obsessed with the novel Treasure Island. It felt forced. Full disclosure: I stopped reading after about 25 pages.

Glad I stuck with it.

Know this: the unnamed main character of this novella is kind of an awful person. If you can accept that, then she is hilarious. 25, underemployed and aimless, she decides to adopt the core values she sees in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure tale. Boldness! Resolution! Independence! Horn-blowing! Also there’s a parrot. What could go wrong?

Part satire and part absurd farce, this book is absolutely hilarious. The writing makes the awful, delightfully delusional narrator engaging and amusing. A pithy tone throughout the story illustrates exactly who our hero is. Great for anyone who's okay with not taking the protagonist at all seriously.

The description piques my interest. Then I read the comments: "bleh" "yech" "faint praise" and then "I LOVE THIS". So I will try it- often my tastes run counter to the culture-at-large.

The narrator is appalling without being even slightly interesting. Very over-hyped book.

Presumably a spoof of memoirs, but too scattershot and dull in its targets - and the narrator is more annoying than engaging.

-not as good as its reputation.
-it'd make a cute 1/2 hour tv comedy.

I haven't finished this book yet, but so far it is REALLY good and I can't wait to finish it. It's DEFINITELY worth reading. If it isn't available at your local library, put it on hold and have it delivered. You won't regret it. It remiinds me a lot of the book 'Clowngirl' by Monica Drake; also a really good read. Pick up Treasure Island!!! today!!!!!!!
