While the plot was okay, I was looking for an intelligently written murder mystery. This was not it. It was also surprisingly difficult to read perhaps because it was written in 1945. Unlike modern novels using a time period from decades ago, this had very different vocabulary, syntax, punctuation and flow. The constant references to smoking and drinking made me laugh with one character indicated he was very drunk so he had to "drive around" to get sober and other character had to have a cigarette while sneaking around a darkened house for a possible villian! Alas, the story wasn't enough for me to read anymore from this author.
