maclean used ww2 for much of his novels. this is one of them, and a rip-roaring yarn, it is. for me the high point is during the plane ride back to allied territory. what goes on between the hero-character, and the villain, is nearly heart stopping. there is a climb up a mountain, there is a ski lift, also; earlier in the book. Alistair's writing is such that I get dizzy from the heights, and the danger. I'm not going to say this is 'one of his best;' there are many of approximately the same quality, (FEAR IS THE KEY, ICE STATION ZEBRA, GUNS OF NAVARONE, the story collection, THE LONELY SEA, etc.).
