This is a book worth reading and written in good Conroy style. Very interesting topics covered through the character portrayal. My favorite is Toomer.

This copy, from the Chinook Arch Library system is not a paperback. It is a very large hardcover. Sept 20, I believe I started this book .....Oct 1, 1/2 way through. So far, not the most exciting book that I have read, hence the long time that it is taking me to read it. (easily distracted by other more exciting things, or maybe it's just the time of year, and I am getting things laid away for winter?) I think I like Pat's non-fiction better. Will let you know if it picks up. (This is fiction, but from what I gather from his other books, is based highly on his childhood.) It is his first novel, so I'm going to give his other novels a shot, to see if they get better, (insert Feb 8 2014, - I absolutely LOVED "South of Broad")......Oct 6, well it picked up, but not until about 3/4 through. Now I'm having a hard time putting it down. I wish he had put a little of this suspense stuff in earlier. Well, it is his first novel!......Feb 8, 2014, well I see that I didn't note when I finished this book....I am currently reading "The Death of Santini" which in non-fiction and explains a lot why I didn't like the first part of this book...he had to make things up because no one believed him! Anyway, I looked up this book, hoping to find a DVD or even a video cassette of the movie, (he devotes a chapter in "the death" to the movie.) No luck......maybe someone out there in library land has one kicking around that they could donate to the Chinook Arch system in southern Alberta? I guess I could maybe find it online, but I haven't had much success with that in the past. I'm just not very good at Amazon and all that yet. Probably too old for the book stores to have a copy, but maybe with the release of "The Death of" it will spark a resurgence? Here's hoping!

If/when I'm asked for my list of best books ever read, this is always in the top few. Based on the author's family home life with a madly military father & dependent mother. Moving in every way, frightening, sad, funny, seemingly endless waiting for the next crackpot set of orders from father. Very highly recommended.
