This is a sad love story, that is beautifully written. Perhaps what makes it even sadder is that it could never be written today, in this age of expose everything and anything goes. William Maxwell is a little-known, but astonishingly good writer. I liked his They Came Like Swallows better, but still recommend this book for a glimpse of beauty from days long past.
