In the introduction, the novelist Julian Barnes is quoted about fellow novelist Kinglsey Amis's growing offensive comments as he aged: "You would think, we'll let that pass, but increasingly. . .it seemed that the price to pay was swallowing what you believed about things."
Amis wrote one of the great campus novels, "Lucky Jim," but a sourness and rigidity (and outright bigotry) marred much of his later work. This slim novel from 1974 is a comic novel about aging, but it's not particularly funny or insightful. Part of a handsomely reissued series of Amis novels put out by New York Review Book.
