This is undoubtedly one of Steinbeck's finer works. It's the prose equivalent of the musical tone poem, or aptly, a word-painting, by which I mean the focus rests on observing the town of Cannery Row and its inhabitants. This lies in stark contrast to more action based page-turners, or mythical stories based around the hero's journey, in which outside forces drive a clearly defined plot forward, bringing the protagonist to struggles and difficult choices. This book has little in way of a plot, which is a rarity in my reading experience. Steinbeck's prolonged descriptive passages and attention to detail make an audiobook the perfect way to enjoy this novel.
