Carver, an orphan raised by the white masters of his slave parents, went on to become a prominent scientist and professor. Written for high school students and up, this biography begins with a discussion of the political and social circumstances in Missouri where Carver was born into slavery around 1864, then recounts his early years, his education, and his teaching career, and gives information on the significance of his agricultural research. The book also explores Carver's other interests, such as art and painting, and highlights his relationship as mentor to many until his death in 1943. A timeline and b&w historical photos are included. Kremer is executive director of The State Historical Society of Missouri and adjunct faculty member at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
