Genres include science fiction and fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, short stories, poetry, picture books, historical fiction, biography, and nonfiction, along with Accelerated Reader, Reading Counts, and Junior Library Guild selections. Books were chosen if they were published in the last ten years, were age appropriate, somehow lifted the reader's spirits, and included themes of good morals, leadership, courage, and nobility. They were chosen from awards lists and the author's recommendations. A description, bibliographic information, and how the book fits the criteria are detailed. The book is aimed at language art teachers and book clubs. It is also for public and school librarians to use for readers advisory, programming, and collection development.
