In present-day New Orleans, Polly Deschamps finds herself at yet another lonely crossroads in her life until she encounters architect Marshall Marchand, a lifelong bachelor who spends most of his time with his brother Danny. When Polly's two young daughters from her previous marriage are likewise taken with Marshall, she marries him. But then an ominous prediction by a New Orleans tarot card reader proclaims that Polly will murder her husband, and Polly senses that there could be a connection between Marchand and the infamous "Butcher Boy" multiple homicide.

Ms.Barr should stick with her Ann Pigeon character. This novel is over long, the plot twist obvious by the middle of the book and Polly (the female protagonist) has to be one of the truly dumbest college professors ever imagined.

NOT A GOOD READ, BARR CAN DO BETTER

I’m weird enough to read a book just to satisfy my curiosity about a title. It’s a prison tattoo, stands for 12 jurors, 1 judge & ½ a chance. If you were also curious I just saved you the ordeal of having to read this. Not a book for the faint hearted, it’s full of overly graphic descriptions of child murderers, I prefer some subtlety. I almost gave it up but couldn’t, too caught up in the story, so I guess credit is due to the author on some level. It has a good premise and the story of a boy imprisoned for the murder of his family is finally (1/2 way into the book) rescued from the morose by the character Polly as a love interest. Liked the New Orleans setting and the tarot card reader was a spicy touch. It was okay but ridiculously predictable.
Favorite quote “perhaps love was like the mumps. If a woman came down with it after forty, it could kill her"

Not my favorite Barr novel. Colorful characters and entertaining, but not one I'd read again. I prefer Ms. Barr's other novels.

disappointing for a Nevada Barr work. Plot twist figured out before 1/2 through the book. Female protagonist completely unbelievable.

I did not find this book up to the standard of Nevada Barr's other books. At times it was very hard to follow the plot of the book. I hope this is not an indicator of future books by this author.
