Inspired by a near-mythic event of the wild Florida frontier at the turn of the twentieth century, Shadow Country reimagines the legend of the inspired Everglades sugar planter and notorious outlaw E. J. Watson, who drives himself relentlessly toward his own violent end at the hands of neighbors who mostly admired him, in a killing that obsessed his favorite son.--From publisher description.

I finally gave up after I got to part 19 because it was the slowest moving plot I have ever read. Unfortunately, apparently the last book was the best, but I don't have the stamina to persevere. The portrayals of some of the characters and the prejudice of that time were certainly thought provoking and insightful.

Although it is the same story about EJ Watson, it is told by watson himself. The reader is very dramatic, great reading.
Having said that, the problem I had was that it is hard to hear sometimes. I don't sit and listen to audio books. Being busy, I listen while doing chores. When the reader, in this case performer fits better, in soft whispering voices, it is difficult to descern what was said. I had to adjust the volume constantly.
Audio book needs to be heard sometimes over the noise of the traffic, kitchen fan, etc. I hope the director keeps this in mind.
