I liked this 4 part historical documentary. It is the story of MGM from about 1926 to 1970. In 1926 Loew had just put three film companies into the same management so they work together financially. New York was Loew's office. Loew controlled the distribution for the money. The three film locations still competed with each other to make a film better than the other one. They were really secret about their projects. Through the years the management changed many times. This effected what films were made. This story introduces the famous actor/actresses that made movies. It is well organized. It is very detailed.

Here is a great way to supplement your knowledge of the great MGM studio from it start. All the producers, directors, and most importantly for me, the stars of MGM movies. She them back stage, at premieres and at award ceremonies. You start to feel like stars are just ordinary people who also make movies. I think some of the clips from their best movies, will help direct you to seeing something you might have missed. I hope you enjoy MGM When The Lion Roars because there is 6 hours on the set of DVD's.

A mostly interesting, but somehow vague documentary. Sure, they have a lot to cover in charting the entire rise and fall of MGM, but they did do it in six hours. Overall, it just feels a bit...as I said, vague. The pacing is off. They devote a lot of time to very early MGM, but breeze over some of the middle stuff and by the end it feels like they're downright rushing through information. Even at six hours, I would've liked them to take some more time with some of this stuff.
