There is A LOT going on in this book. For certain authors and series, this works. For this middle-grade series, I don't think it does. Mull jumps his focus around on so many plot points that you wind up dizzy. Are we supposed to be focused on the eating statue? Or the artifact? Or the traitor? Also, the huge influx of new characters in here is overwhelming. I didn't have trouble keeping everyone straight, but I feel there were more characters than were needed to tell the story. Seth, again, makes poor decisions and we roll our collective eyes. Kendra is ridiculously powerful and can do any and all sorts of magical things. The grandparents are once again useless (makes you wonder how they actually survived running the preserve for so many years by themselves.) I suppose if you take away all these issues and just "enjoy the ride" it's OK. The story never stalls, simply because there's always something crazy going on. Even though I just finished it, I would have trouble relaying to anyone everything that the main characters did- and not all of it relates to the main plot thread.
Enough bashing. The good things? Kendra's powers were pretty interesting, if a little OP. I liked the return of Mendigo, and Tanu's potions were helpful and introduced intriguing possibilities. Seth was actually helpful towards the end, and I really liked Warren. I hope he continues to make appearances in the upcoming books- he's the best character here by far.
All in all? Very, very busy, but not bad.

The Rise of the Evening Star is the second book in the Fablehaven series. Frankly, it is one of my favourite books in the Fablehaven series. In the last book, we left off with Kendra and Seth, two ordinary kids who go on an extraordinary adventure. They’ve been through a lot during their summer with their grandparents, and they can’t wait to go back. This book is full of plot twists, betrayal, and fantasy. The tests the truth of who you can and cannot trust. Furthermore, it stretches your imagination to the depths that you did not think were possible. As the reader will soon come to know, the title of the book has its own meaning. Kendra and Seth, while at Fablehaven for the second time, learn of a mysterious organization called The Society of the Evening Star. They are set out to corrupt magical preserves and use them for their own intentions, which are nonetheless evil. As the reader has come to know, Fablehaven is a magical preserve. In the second book of the series, the two kids must learn that not everyone is trustworthy, and those who are at the moment, may not be in a few pages. Rating: 5/5

Fablehaven, the rise of the evening star was a noteworthy book. You got to go on a great adventure with the characters. Additionally, the new characters are quite interesting and have their own personalities. The book was really good.

Re-reading a series I LOVED when I was 8 and 9 years old. Now at 14 I'm still entertained by it and just started Book 3 last night.

hats off to you, Brandon Mull!

-One critique, though its more to the illustrator than Brandon.

Kendra's supposed to be 14 in this book, but the illustration from her meeting with the sphinx makes her look like she's 8
