No matter your reason for downsizing--whether you are trading the larger family home for a smaller, more manageable one, or perhaps just looking to simplify life--the transition can be a challenge. When you're moving a lifetime's accumulation of belongings, the task can seem overwhelming--and so can your emotions. How do you decide what to pack and what to part with? Where will you put the contents of your attic, basement, and/or garage? How can you use the stuff you've got so that it functions well and looks right? This book answers these questions and more. New York decorator Ward is an expert in making small spaces both elegant and functional. From the initial evaluation to one year after you have settled in, she takes you through every step with detailed tips and tricks.--From publisher description.

Pictures of rooms and furniture were certainly outdated. People get too attached to material things.

This book has some good tips and even though many of them were ones that I've heard before it's good to recall how helpful they can be.
The author has a business based on using what you have but also includes sections of things that you could buy if you wanted to. Some of it was fairly pricey, but I think some good thrifty searching could accomplish a lot of that without spending so much.

All-in-all a helpful book.

In all honesty this title really and truly is everything anyone needs to know. We downsized, on our own, and made a huge mess of it. How I wish I had done my research! Clear and oh so practical solutions to problems never faced in a large home including disguises and repurposing. This is a must read for those who are moving from big to small.

This is not just a de-cluttering guide, this is a decorating, repairing and downsizing guide all rolled into one bright little book.
There are entire chapters on creative storage (you can never have enough), repurposing (or ‘MacGyvering’) older pieces, finding multiple functions for small spaces and how to decide what to keep or ditch – plus an entire chapter on where to ditch the things you decide not to keep, often a stumbling block for those of us who are pack rats at heart.
