Morgan Adams, the female captain of a pirate ship, is on a treasure hunt for millions of pounds of gold reportedly buried somewhere on Cutthroat Island. She and her uncles each hold sections of the map to the treasure. While Morgan is willing to make deals and agree to share the wealth in order to put the map together, her Uncle Dawg would rather kill everyone in his way, including his niece.

Cutthroat Island is great fun. A gorgeous movie, with lots of action, and funny. Will have you wanting to run away to sea yourself.

Wait, how is this movie not rated "ARRRRR!" Ah, pirate humor. 1995's "Cutthroat Island" takes its places with "Waterworld," "Showgirls," and "The Bonfire of the Vanities" as one of the 90s biggest flops/failures. You can check out some of the production issues on its IMDB or Wikipedia page. "Waterworld" also came out in 1995 and its production problems were more prominently featured in the press, so "Cutthroat Island," which lost far more money, is little more than a footnote. Various films were trying to revive the swashbuckling tradition in the 90s, including "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "The Three Musketeers." "Cutthroat Island" suffers, as those films do, from its lead actors, who are unconvincing in period roles. Geena Davis, who was married to director Renny Harlin at the time, is game, but can't really pull it off. Matthew Modine grew a mustache to try and look like Errol Flynn, but is really boring. Only Frank Langella understands how to get through this mess and that's to overact. The story is pretty inane and the action bombastic, but a lof of the money is up on the screen and at least the ships, costumes, and settings look great. Hell, it's not any worse than Costner's "Robin Hood." Maybe it was ahead of its time, as "Pirates of the Caribbean" was a huge success years later. A decent dumb popcorn movie. Harlin and Davis would also do "The Long Kiss Goodnight" together before divorcing in 1998.

Lotsa of explosion and action. Too bad the younger Genna Davis (film made 16 years ago) didn't come across as a tough inspiring pirate leader. Standard pirate treasure villians affair.
