Book News
Based on interviews with farmers, herders, monks, nuns, Tibetan intellectuals, Chinese government officials, and both Tibetan and Han Chinese Urban residents conducted while travelling through central Tibet (especially Lhasa). Journalist Erickson investigates and analyzes modern day Tibet from the standpoint of its environment; health care and education systems; language, culture, and religion; and its relations with China and human rights. She counters charges of deliberate genocide and systematic destruction of Tibetan culture by the Chinese government, but acknowledges that there are economic factors that bring many Han Chinese to Tibet as well as significant political oppression that together seriously threaten the cultural survival of Tibet.
