"What makes Sammy run? What makes Sammy run? I would take another drink, and ask one of the bartenders:
'Say, Henry, what makes Sammy run?'
'What the hell are you talking about, Al?'
'I'm talking about Sammy Glick, that's who I'm talking about. What makes Sammy run?'"
Even though writers and Hollywood have had a long, if fitful, relationship, there are few great Hollywood novels. You've got Fitzgerald's final, unfinished "Last Tycoon," Mailer's execrable "Deer Park," West's "Day of the Locust," which is my favorite. I'm sure there are more I'm missing. Anyway, "What Makes Sammy Run?" is a Horatio Alger-ish, Hollywood-set story about the ambitious, striving title character, originally published in 1941 and later turned into a hit musical. Author Budd Schulberg wrote the screenplays to "On the Waterfront" and "A Face in the Crowd," among others. This edition, published in the early 50s, has an introduction by him. It reminded me a little of the film "Sweet Smell of Success."
