The Breakup of Yugoslavia and Its AftermathThe Breakup of Yugoslavia and Its Aftermath
Rogel, a leading U.S. specialist on Yugoslavia and the war in Bosnia, examines the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, the war in Bosnia, the peace settlement, and the problems that continue to exist in Bosnia and Serbia today. She provides information and analysis to help students understand the collapse of Tito's Yugoslavia, the causes and effects of the ensuing war, and the aftermath of the conflicts. Seven essays analyze the crisis, including two that focus on the aftermath of a decade strained with conflict and war, and the current conditions in the former Yugoslavia.

• A timeline of events
• Lengthy biographical sketches of Yugoslav leaders and Western diplomats
• Primary documents
• A glossary of selected terms
• An annotated bibliography of recommended further reading, films, documentaries, and websites
While not entirely uncritical of the major Western powers, Rogel (emeritus, history, Ohio State U.) hews fairly closely to their standard narrative for understanding the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and the resulting warfare. Writing for a lay audience, she explores the history of Tito's Yugoslavia, discusses the development of the war in Bosnia-Hercegovina, the "collective embarrassment" of the "bumbling" major powers in dealing with the crisis, the war in Kosovo, and the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. Also included are biographical sketches of important figures, a glossary, a brief annotated bibliography, and a collection of primary documents featuring UN resolutions and political declarations by various actors.
