A convicted killer's attorney asks suffragist Nell Bray to investigate the case, but it looks bleak for the convicted man, until Nell discovers that the victim of the murder had a terrible secret

Blackwell North Amer
Nell Bray's brother, Stuart, somehow manages to convince the overworked suffragette to take a vacation at his country home. Instead of relaxing, however, Nell becomes absorbed by the story of Osbert Newbiggin, a murdered mill owner who lived next door to Stuart.
Her interest is further piqued when the convicted murderer's attorney shows up at dinner one night and secretly tries to enlist Nell's aid in reopening the case - even though his client can be placed at the scene of the crime before the murder and is commonly known to have had a severe falling-out with Osbert, his former employer.
Even Nell thinks the situation looks bleak - until she begins to unearth not only the tense political conflicts surrounding Osbert's mill, but one particularly disturbing personal secret Osbert and his family have managed to keep under wraps for years....
