Baldacci's first book, published after years of being rejected (why is this so often true?), became a huge hit. A well-written, entertaining thriller, with sympathetic characters. In fact, the characters are better-realized than in his more recent works. Atypically, he frequently refers to them by their first name; in later books he uses their surname; this makes them both more professional & harder to relate to. A very enjoyable, interesting & satisfying read.

I had to read this over 3 days, what a great plot. Unlike some of his novels, the characters have more insight into what is driving them to make some of their decisions. A vey interesting way for author to critique his government by exposing flaws in the presidential system through crime fiction.

Excellent book. I still have a difficult time believing this was the first one by Baldacci. Very talented writer

A Great Diversion

There are some leaders who believe they are above the law and they are the most dangerous. A riveting read for a holiday.

Interesting speculation on the possible abuse of presidential power should a man with no conscience gain the office. Also develops the theme "Just Following Orders" and applies to the Secret Service.
